Forklift Barriers

Forklift Barriers

Project Description

This project involved the design, manufacture, and installation of a bespoke forklift barrier system aimed at improving workplace safety and traffic management within the customer’s facility. The solution was developed to create a clear physical separation between pedestrian walkways and forklift operating routes, helping to reduce the risk of accidents in high-traffic operational areas.

Scope

The forklift barriers were designed and installed to create a clear separation between pedestrian walkways and designated forklift routes within the facility. The primary objective of the project was to improve on-site safety by minimising the risk of interaction between pedestrians and moving forklift trucks.

To further enhance safety measures, spring-loaded safety gates were incorporated at designated crossing points. These gates allow pedestrians to cross forklift routes safely during periods when no forklift activity is taking place, while also helping to maintain controlled access throughout the operational area.

The initial project scope was adjusted to include the laser cut signs as ease of maximum visibility was suggested by the JB engineering team.

The customer’s project scope was established with the support and guidance from our JB engineering fabrication team, which has the required skills and experience on guarding and barrier work.

Process

The project began with a series of site visits to engage directly with the customer and gain a detailed understanding of their operational requirements, safety concerns, and layout constraints. These consultations ensured that the final solution would align with both the customer’s expectations and the practical demands of the working environment. Following the initial assessments, detailed measurements of the area were taken and CAD drawings were produced. These drawings provided the customer with a visual representation of the proposed barrier system and allowed for approval prior to fabrication.

Once the design phase was completed, all fabrication work was carried out in-house. During manufacturing, trial assemblies of the barrier components were conducted to verify fit, alignment, and overall quality before progressing further. After fabrication and quality inspections were completed, the barriers and gates were sent for powder coating to provide a durable and professional finish suitable for an industrial environment. Upon return from the powder coaters, all components underwent additional quality checks to ensure that the finish and structural integrity met the required standards before delivery to site.

The final stage involved the installation of the barriers and gates at the customer’s premises. Throughout the installation process, work was reviewed and approved by the customer to ensure the completed system met all agreed specifications and safety requirements.

Challenge

A key challenge encountered during the project was the positioning of certain barriers at unequal angles due to the existing floor layout and the size of the designated areas. This created difficulties in achieving precise alignment and maintaining consistency across the installation.

Solution

To overcome this challenge, a second site visit was arranged to carry out a more detailed assessment of the installation area. During this visit, the proposed barrier layout was marked directly onto the floor using a laser line system to ensure maximum accuracy. Precise measurements were then taken from the marked layout, enabling the team to fabricate templates before manufacturing the final barrier sections. This approach ensured that all components were produced to the correct dimensions and angles, resulting in an accurate fit during installation and a high-quality finished product.

THE PROJECT WAS COMPLETED ON SCHEDULE, WITHIN BUDGET, AND MET ALL QUALITY EXPECTATIONS
